He's not your average TV model or actor.
Called the bodyguards of Lord Jagannatha, he belongs to the 'daitapati' sect of sevayats (servitors) of Lord Jagannatha at Puri.
Of course some of them have gone to become Mr. India and Mr. Odisha as well.
This daitapati sect of sevayats are direct descendants of the legendary Sabara chief Bishwabasu, who is the first worshipper of Nila Madhava (Jagannatha), whose daughter eventually married Vidyapati sent by King Indrudyumna. Rest is history.
Daitapatis carry out crucial tasks in the temple. If you've seen Ratha Yatra procession (called pahandi), the three Deities are held tightly in the arms by these people, both at front and back, with ropes tied to their body, moving in to-and-fro motion. Quite a task.
On the Deva Snana purnima (bathing day of the deities), these sevayats carry out the 'anabasara' rituals in complete secrecy (when the deities have fallen sick and are recovering away from public eyes)
They also play crucial role in the most spectacular ritual of the nabakalebara (when deities take new bodies). They perform the Ghata Parivartan task- transferring the Brahma from old to new wooden body, blindfolded. Legendary stories exist on this ritual if you care explore.
As these daitapatis also consider Lord Jagannatha to be their family member, upon the nabakalebara ritual, they mourn for 10 days and perform suddhikriya on 11th day, as done for family members.
Finally, Puri was a known place of paika akhadas (traditional kshatra/ martial arts tradition). Finding bahubali figures even today is not surprising.
