Give without expecting anything in return.”

Give without expecting anything in return.”

Once Krishna and Arjuna were walking towards a village. Arjuna was pestering Krishna, asking him why Karna should be considered an unparalleled Donor & not him?

Krishna turned two mountains into gold.

Then said, “Arjuna, distribute these two gold mountains among villagers, but you must donate every bit of it “.

Arjuna went into the village and proclaimed he was going to donate gold to every villager, and asked them to gather near the mountain.

The villagers sang his praises and Arjuna walked towards the hills with a huffed up the chest.

For two days and two nights, Arjuna shovelled gold from the mountain and donated to each villager. The mountains did not diminish in the slightest.

Most villagers came back and stood in the queue within minutes. Now Arjuna was exhausted, told Krishna he couldn’t go on any longer without rest.

Then Krishna called Karna and told him to donate every bit of the two gold mountains.

Karna called the villagers, and said “Those two Gold mountains are yours. ” and walked away.

Arjuna sat dumbfounded. Why hadn’t this thought occurred to him?

Social Influence, the art of making people do what you want.

Social Influence consists of producing an image of reality that looks real.

It is part of the daily life of civilizations where systems of power, conflicts of interest, power relations, are omnipresent.

Social Influence develops from self-awareness, language, and the hierarchy of society that produces a lot of interactions and that everyone wants to take advantage of.

Social Influence can be achieved by regularly using various means of psychological pressure such as

Fear,
Hope,
Guilt, etc.

This yields very interesting results on the human psyche.

If you are smart enough to understand humans as "machines", or as pre-programmed automates,

That means that you have a better understanding of reality than 99% of the human population.

Humans, tend to react a certain way in certain situations, thus in predictable patterns.

By controlling the information (controlling the input), you can predict, and a fortiori, decide on the reactions of a given human being.

This is the base of any human interaction.

With this understanding, you can change the output (the reaction), and change how people act.

The reason why this scheme takes a central position in Social Influence is that it is important for your subject to believe that his actions are furthering his own interests.

Why would they take those actions otherwise?

Your strategic objective as a social influencer is to

Control the flow of information in such a way that your subject's reaction should lead to actions that further your own interests.

Your main problem, given that social influence, lies in the condition of no coercion, is to be discovered.

Do not abuse social influence techniques, and maintain plausible deniability if your machinations ever come to be found.

Entrepreneurship: expectations vs reality

There are a lot of misconceptions people have about entrepreneurship.
Reality is often far from expectations. Let’s see how.

Entrepreneurship is a high-risk/high-reward venture. In today’s world, more and more individuals are shedding conventional wisdom about securing the 9-to-5 and going out there to chase their dreams. People like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg are revered around the world. Few actually manage to succeed, though: as many as nine out of 10 new enterprises fail. Many people romanticise entrepreneurship and underestimate the sheer amount of effort that goes into building a business from scratch. Entrepreneurial hero-worship is a problem: calling an entrepreneur a genius is, in a very real way, a grave insult to the hard work and dedication they’ve put in. There are a lot of misconceptions people have about entrepreneurship.

Reality is often far from expectations. Let’s see how:

Expectation “I will be in control of my things. I will have more time for those vacations I have been postponing. I will have more cash at hand and, of course, nobody can say a word to me since I’m my own boss.”

Reality You will be working harder than you have ever worked in your life. Everything you own belongs to the company now. For the first several months or even years, your business won’t generate significant revenue and you will have to live on the edge. Your personal life, relationships, health, and finances will all be hit hard. And the customer, your boss, will rarely be polite, reasonable, or even pay on time. However, always remember that your business is an idea that’s worth fighting. You’re in for a world of pain, but buckle up and face the challenges head-on to achieve success.

Expectation “Everything will work out smoothly. Investors, friends, and family will love it. Customers will shower me with millions of dollars.”

Reality A good business idea is only worthwhile when executed properly. Execution is the difference between success and failure, and it is the number one hurdle most new entrepreneurs fail to overcome. You need to have a solid game plan to accommodate every possible contingency: how do you approach investors? How do you market your product? How and where do you source supplies? How do you find the right team? How do you deal with government compliance? You will have to find viable answers for thousands of questions like these ones. And even when you have a good plan, things might not actually go according to it. There is a significant element of chance. You need to be prepared and you need to have backup plans (and backups for your backups!) to ensure resiliency.

Expectations “The investors love me! They’re my pals: they believe in my idea; we hang out together and it’s going to be an easy ride.”

Reality Any relationship involving money is inherently fragile. It’s important to develop a strong relationship with your investors, but it needs to be based on trust and your ability to deliver. While a great elevator pitch might be enough to secure your first round of funding, remember that investors are investing their money with an eye on the returns. Building long-term investor confidence means building and executing a business plan that actually succeeds.

Expectation “I have the best idea. My product is going to take the world by storm.”

Reality Your product is not the world. Every business involves so many interconnections and relationships that go far beyond your product. Even if your product is a game-changer, you’ll need to account for all of these factors if you truly expect it to succeed.

You need to hire the right people to build an ideal core team. You need to ensure reliable relationships with both suppliers and retailers. You need to build promotional campaigns that are data-driven and based on consumer insights. Engage with other stakeholders like interest groups and the government and build strong relationships. And while doing all of this, you need to balance your finances and ensure you have the operating capital to keep things working on the ground. Even giants like WeWork have gone bust due to maladministration.

In conclusion… At the end of the day, success doesn’t come easy, and it isn’t assured either. Still, if you have the grit and you’re willing to put your future on the line, entrepreneurship offers rewards unlike any other career path. Become an entrepreneur if it’s the right path for you, but be aware that the reality might not match your preexisting ideas.

4 Signs Your Job Might Be in Jeopardy

Shailendra (not his real name) was the vice president of global account management for a $500 million division of a major manufacturing corporation. When he came to me for executive coaching, Shailendra had a six-year track record of success directing and implementing his group’s strategy, and he had successfully grown his division’s revenues by 50% since joining the organization. Colleagues and clients alike recognized Shailendra for his impressive relationship-building skills, as well as his ability to effectively translate customer requirements back to the engineering and supply-chain teams to improve the company’s products and performance.
By the looks of his resume, Shailendra hardly seemed like someone whose job was at risk. Yet three weeks later, he was shocked by the news that his position had been eliminated. What happened? While his termination may have caught Shailendra off guard, the fact is that prior to the event, there had been clear signs of trouble — if only he had known how to recognize them.
For example, Shailendra shared with me that six months before he was let go, a new CEO had taken the helm at the company. While Shailendra had previously always been invited to attend executive committee meetings, he now, inexplicably, found himself shut out of this vital communication loop. Although frustrated by this turn of events, Shailendra attributed the change to the new CEO’s management style, rather than recognizing the potential danger it foreshadowed for his own position.
Shailendra's inability to connect the dots in order to recognize a common sign that his job was in jeopardy is not unusual. Sometimes the clues are so subtle that recognizing them is difficult until it’s too late. But being attuned to these underlying messages is critical to career survival. Had Shailendra been street smart, so to speak, about the shifting dynamics in his company’s management team, he might have been better equipped to recognize and prepare for — or perhaps even take steps to prevent — being fired.
While it seems counterintuitive, strong performance in your role doesn’t equal job security. I’ve seen plenty of firsthand evidence of this through coaching a wide range of executives in diverse industries. Research supports this reality as well. In a Zenger and Folkman study, 77% of employees whose positions were eliminated had received positive performance reviews in the year prior to their dismissal. As the researchers proved, numerous factors go into a company’s decision to retain or eliminate individual employees.
Knowing that there are many reasons your job may be at risk — some you can control and others you can’t — means it’s critical to be able to recognize the signals that things are going wrong. Your awareness of key signs of job jeopardy can give you a chance to manage or navigate the situation without being blindsided — or at least start looking for a new job before the axe falls. Here are four warning signs not to ignore:

A change at the top.

As in Shailendra situation, a management shakeup that shifts who is in control in relation to your position, department, and/or company can be a harbinger that things will be different. Changes in leadership can precipitate changes in job status for individuals or entire teams. A new boss may want to bring in fresh perspectives, or hire people whom they are already familiar with, which could mean the writing is on the wall for existing employees.

You’re cut out of the loop.

Let’s drill down more deeply into Shailendra's example to identify the signs prior to his dismissal. When the new CEO came on board, Shailendra incorrectly assumed that he could continue to rely on the same communication approach that had worked with the previous CEO. He thought the best way to build a relationship with his new boss would be to inform him how he believed things should be done, because his past manager had appreciated that style. And Shailendra believed that because he had institutional knowledge, which the incoming CEO lacked, the new leader would value this directive approach.
What Shailendra learned too late is that the new CEO found Shailendra's style to be presumptuous and arrogant, leading to Shailendra's removal from the executive committee. Suddenly, he was not invited to meetings that he expected to attend and no longer received copies of sensitive documents. He was also iced out of the informal communication loop, and he could no longer get a straight answer when he asked others on the executive committee what was up. These were all red flags that Shailendra had fallen out of favor with his new boss, and that his job was at risk.

You lose a sponsor.

When Shailendra's previous CEO announced his retirement and left the company, Shailendra lost his primary supporter and sponsor. Additionally, Shailendra had not developed many other board-level relationships, which might have helped him weather the management transition with additional alliances in his corner. Regardless of the type of organization you work for, you need to ask yourself, “Who is willing to advocate for me?” and understand that it’s vital for more than one influential leader to be willing to expend political capital on your behalf.

Fewer projects come your way.

Another indicator that management may plan to lay you off is reassignment of work. If you had been the go-to person in your group to spearhead new projects but suddenly are no longer are tapped when you raise your hand for opportunities, it’s a bad sign. This situation happened to my client Kathy (not her real name), a director of an academic institute. Without warning and within a matter of weeks, Kathy discovered that her most essential tasks were being reassigned to a colleague. Each time Kathy attempted to talk to her manager about it, she encountered a stone wall of excuses and obfuscations. Kathy was let go soon after.
Positive performance reviews — and even promotions — can bring a false sense of security. Especially in uncertain times, it’s vital to look honestly at hints that your organization may be about to terminate you. By recognizing the above signs that your job may be in jeopardy, you can take the needed actions to prepare, and make choices that will expand your options in the future.

I respect your patriotism...

THE BHISHMA WAY or THE JATAYU WAY

THE BHISHMA WAY  or
THE JATAYU WAY

No two people react to the same situation in a similar way.

Here are examples of two legendary personalities who were faced with a very similar situation, but thier responses were diagonally apart.

One has been elevated but the other only recognised.
It's in between Bhisma and Jatayu.

Both, of them were confronted with character defining asssault on womanhood.

One chose to die protecting the victim while the other chose to be a mute spectator of the crime.

1) POWERFUL or POWERLESS

Bhisma was a powerful and capable warrior and if he wanted, he could have stopped the disrobing of Draupadi - the Queen
But he chose to be a silent witness of this act;

Where, Jatayu was old and invalid and knew that in all probability, Ravana would kill him. Still, he chose to try his best to protect Sita - the Queen.

Bhisma was powerful yet acted powerless, where Jatayu was powerless yet acted powerful. _

"Real power is not about physical strength but about the deep desire to help."_

2) ALIVE or DEAD

Bhisma lived on but died everyday to his conscience;

Where Jatayu died once but lived eternally true to his conscience. _

"Our only constant companion is our concience - better to be true to it."_

3) FAME or INFAMY

Bhisma's name and fame went down in history because of this one act of not stopping the disrobing of Draupadi.

But Jatayu's name and fame went high in history because of his act of trying to save Sita. _

"Many of us are going to be mere names in history, sooner or later. Will we be equated with the bad or the good - is our choice."_

4) CULTURE or VULTURE

Bhisma was supposed to be a highly cultured human but acted highly insensitive and stooped low in values like a vulture;

Where, Jatayu was supposed to be a lowly uncultured vulture but acted highly sensitive and soared the skies in values like an evolved human. _

"One doesn't become a human, by being born as a human - only becomes a human by being a human."_

5) SPOKEN or UNSPOKEN WORDS

Draupadi begged and pleaded protection from Bhisma because she knew if someone could protect her it was only him but still Bhisma didn't protect her;

Where, Sita didn't even ask Jatayu for protection - she just wanted him to inform Rama about her kidnapping by Ravana because she knew Jatayu was not powerful but still Jatayu tried to protect Sita.

"The language of heart is more powerful than the language of words."_

6) CLARITY or CONFUSION

Bhisma was confused regarding his Royal duty that he forgot that he had a higher duty - a moral duty;

Where, Jatayu was so clear about his moral duty that no other duty was a consideration for him.

"When caught up in dilemmas, best is to follow the higher principles - to follow our heart because it always knows the truth."

7) GOOD or BAD EXAMPLE

Bhisma set a very bad precedent for generations to come;

Where, Jatayu set the most ideal precedent for generations to come. _

"If we can't be a great example atleast let us not be a bad one."_

8) RELATIVE or STRANGER

Another interesting point is that Bhisma was an elderly relative of Draupadi but acted as a total stranger in this episode;

Where, Jatayu was not at all related to Sita, he was a stranger but acted more than a dearest relative.

"True relationships is based on heartly connections not just bodily connections."_

9) THE SAINTLY or THE WICKED

Both, Bhisma and Jatayu had a few moments to decide what to do.

Life, sometimes puts in situations where in a few moments we need to take crucial decisions.

What we decide very much depends on the kind of inner integrity we have cultivated by the association we keep.

Bhisma's intelligence was clouded and it failed the test of life because he associated with the wicked minded, selfish Kauravas;

Where, Jatayu's intelligence was crystal clear and it passed the test of life because he associated with the saintly, selfless Lakshman and the All-pure Lord Rama. _

"After all, who we are solely depends on whom we associate with."_

10) EMBRACE or NEGLECT

The Supreme Lord as Sri Krishna was not at all happy with this attitude of Bhisma so much so that when He came as a peace messenger to Hastinapur, He didn't even bother to look at Bhisma;

Where, The Supreme Lord as Ramachandra was so happy with the attitude of Jatayu that he embraced him and personally did his final rites - a honour that even Dasharath - His father didn't receive. _

"The scriptures explain that the ultimate test of any activity is, if the Supreme Lord is pleased with us."_

It is very clear, Bhisma displeased God; where Jatayu pleased Him.

This recount is not meant to criticize Bhisma - he is undoubtedly a great personality, but we do vehemently criticize his inaction.

Moral:

When we see some injustice, some problem, we have only two options -

Either close your eyes to it or do something about it - follow "the Bhisma way" or "the Jatayu way".

Whichever way we choose remember there will also be a result - "the Bhisma result" or "the Jatayu result"._

Maven, Connector, or Salesperson: What’s Your Archetype? MARKETING/SALES

In the book The Tipping Point, author Malcolm Gladwell talks about three different archetypes of people: mavens, connectors, and salespeople. If you’re a changemaker, this framework can help you see why you work the way you do.
Mavens make change happen through information and ideas. These are the people you ask whenever you want to know something about anything — they’re always the people in the know. They’re builders, engineers, process folks, and system folks. It’s all about the ideas and the information.
You might be a maven if:
  • You often feel overwhelmed because you have so many big ideas to unpack.
  • You’re often frustrated by how “thin” a lot of information seems.
  • You can get lost for days working on one idea, or spend months happily exploring the depths of one idea.
  • Your expression is largely about ideas and information, rather than about people or sizzle.
Connectors make change happen through people. They galvanize people. They’re natural hubs. That’s just the way they’re oriented to the world. These are people who, every time you ask a question, start flipping a Rolodex in the back of their mind, saying, “Who do I know who knows this? Who do I know who has done this? Who do I know that I need to connect you with?” They love connecting you with people, because they’re all about the people.
You might be a connector if:
  • You are constantly referring people to the right expert or service to solve their problem.
  • You love networking and talking with people, just for the sake of doing it.
  • When you’re talking to people, they say, “Wow — you know everyone!”
  • The stories you tell always focus on the people, not the ideas or the sizzle.
Salespeople make change happen through persuasion. They can take an idea, make it sticky and accessible, and position it to get a tribe behind it. Salespeople are your storytellers and masters of persuasion. These are the people who can borrow your watch and then sell it back to you. They just have this uncanny ability to get you to buy into whatever they’re selling, whether it’s an idea, a plan, or a product — it doesn’t matter.
You might be a salesperson/persuader if:
  • When you talk about your next project, people are instantly hooked.
  • You sell things without meaning to. (Services, products, ideas — it doesn’t matter what.)
  • You love the chase of getting someone to agree with you or buy into whatever you’re selling.
  • It’s really easy for you to get hooked on sticky, sizzle-y ideas, products, and services.
  • Your stories have sizzle at their basis, and the information and people support the compelling idea.
(Note: The thing about salespeople, or that title, is that people have a lot of Stuck around sales. There are a lot of salespeople out there who are really persuasive [can always get people on their team and tell wonderful stories] but don’t resonate with the sales title. So sometimes you’ll hear me talk about “persuaders” rather than “salespeople” so that we open up that category, so people are open to considering, “What am I naturally good at?” and can start playing from that.)

Why Knowing Your Archetype Matters

The goal in business and life is to really play to your strengths.
It’s about being YOU to the fullest and playing with the deck of cards that you have. After using this model for a few years, I started distinguishing between people’s primary archetype and their secondary archetype. I noticed that a lot of people said, “Well, I’m kind of a maven but I’m also kind of a salesperson.” This is why I talk about the concept a little bit differently than both Pam and Malcolm Gladwell.
Yes, I am (primarily) a maven, so I would start pulling out subtle differences, but it’s more than just mindplay. Knowing what your primary and secondary archetypes are is important because your primary tells you why you do something and what you’re going to be naturally motivated to do, whereas the secondary tells you how it’s going to make the most sense for you to do it.
This means we actually have six categories. Here is a quick breakdown of what they look like, with an example to help you see what these archetype combinations can look like.
Maven-Connector: “I’m all about this big idea, but I’m doing it to galvanize and make things happen with people.” Example: Charlie Gilkey
Maven-Salesperson: “I’m all about this big idea, and I’m going to make sure everyone knows and can access it.” Example: Seth Godin
Connector-Maven: “People and relationships are important, and I can make them even better with my ideas.” Example: Pam Slim
Connector-Saleperson: “People and relationships are important, and we can all be better if we band together behind something.” ExampleTerry “Starbucker” St. Marie
Salesperson-Maven: “This is what we’re going to do, and here is my idea about why and how we’re going to make it happen.” Example: Danielle LaPorte
Salesperson-Connector: “This is what I’m going to do, and you should join me.” Example: Chris Guillebeau
A few model notes. First, the simplistic statement is not meant to encapsulate the entirety of, or nuances of, these people’s great work. Second, I’ve noticed that it’s easy for people to get confused when their great work is with people, ideas, or persuasion; i.e., mavens who focus on marketing and sales may assume that they’re salespeople, when in fact they’re excited about the ideas and processes around marketing.
What’s really fascinating about this is the way in which these personality types interact with each other. Remember, you’re not in a vacuum — you’re always a part of a broader community, a broader ecology. And this is where things get really exciting and this is where the magic happens!
If you’re a maven, you know you need to ally yourself with connectors, because they’re going to connect you with the people world, and you need to ally yourself with salespeople, because they can take whatever it is that you do, hone it, and make it more approachable. We mavens are inherently challenged with making our ideas sticky, making them easy to understand and grab onto. We like to talk about frameworks, processes, and systems, which we’re fascinated by. If we talk to other mavens about this, we’ll have two-and-half-hour long conversations that we enjoy but drive everyone else crazy.
It’s the same with connectors. If you’re a connector, you need to ally yourself with mavens and salespeople. The mavens will take what you’re doing and add depth, rigor, and substance to it. So, if you’re launching a product, it’s great to have mavens on your side, because they’ll give suggestions like, “Maybe you should structure it this way,” or “Maybe this will be the best way to get users.” Salespeople are able to help you use your natural gift of connecting with people in a way that makes your message or what you’re doing easy to spread.
Likewise, if you’re a salesperson, ally yourself with a maven for the rigor and depth your idea needs to have lasting power. Then, ally yourself with connectors, so you can really learn how to make change happen through people.( (That’s really what this is about, after all.)

Play to Your Strengths

I want to keep this fairly brief to get the idea out there and to introduce this idea: When you play with your natural strengths and genius zone, you’re going to have far better results. If you’re naturally a salesperson, don’t try to be a maven — you can’t do it! If you’re naturally a connector, don’t try to be a salesperson — you can’t do it! You can learn how to mimic it, you can learn the skills of that domain, but you can’t truly be that person.

A simpler way to say all of this is: be you, and be you all the way. That’s what I would’ve said if I were a salesperson. 🙂

BRAND Archetypes through lens -Indian-Brands

There has been so much already written about brand archetypes and this is certainly not one more of those articles. In fact, this is rather ...
